Check the stated plan, date and evidence before applying a recommendation to your own workflow.

Quick answer: Evaluate Notion AI when the team's working knowledge already lives in a maintained Notion workspace. The strongest reason to consider it is access to that work context. If documents conflict or lack owners, clean up the sources first. Check your workspace's effective date for the new credit rules.

Notion AI is most interesting to evaluate when useful work already depends on the information in your workspace. The decision is broader than whether it can write a paragraph: can the team find current knowledge, understand the source and keep actions within an appropriate boundary?

Method: We checked Notion's official pricing, AI FAQ and credit documentation on October 21, 2026. We did not connect a workspace or measure answer accuracy, permission enforcement or agent reliability.

Notion AI: start with the state of your knowledge

The pricing page describes Business AI features including agents, meeting notes and workspace search; Free and Plus list trial AI capabilities. Its text extraction does not clearly identify the selected billing toggle, so this review deliberately leaves an exact monthly seat quote unset.

Before piloting AI, identify the approved source for each topic. Two conflicting onboarding documents can produce an apparently authoritative but outdated answer. Assign an owner and a review date, archive obsolete material and use a small set of documents whose answers you already know.

Credit rules are changing

The credit guide says the new system begins October 19, 2026 for new Business and Enterprise workspaces and November 2 for existing workspaces. It lists 1,500 Standard and 500 Select credits per member per month, subject to plan or purchase arrangements. They are separate balances with no rollover; additional workspace-managed Notion credits are distinct.

Do not describe this as unlimited AI, merge the balances into a single interchangeable allowance or apply the new rule to an account before its effective date. Inspect the actual workspace settings for its allowance and any additional usage policy.

A controlled workspace pilot

Choose a process such as answering onboarding questions. Prepare an answer key for ten questions, including one whose source has been retired and one whose answer is intentionally absent. Use authorized test documents without customer secrets.

Question What to inspect
Can it locate the approved policy? Open the cited source and verify its date
Does it handle a missing answer? It should not invent a confident instruction
Is access appropriate? Test with the intended account roles and permissions
Are actions bounded? Review proposed edits before granting broader autonomy
What does operation cost? Record usage, seat assumptions and any extra credits

This is a proposed evaluation. We have not claimed that Notion passed these checks. The AI FAQ is a starting point for product capabilities, while your security and procurement requirements need their own review.

Choose around the workspace, not a benchmark slogan

Notion AI belongs on the shortlist when the workspace is already central to collaboration and the team is willing to maintain its knowledge. If your main need is standalone long-form drafting, compare a separate assistant using the same source documents and human review criteria.

Our assessment is about workflow fit. We do not rate the quality of retrieval, certify access isolation or imply that a trial establishes production readiness. A small, permission-aware pilot and a confirmed account quote should precede a larger rollout.

Standard and Select are not the same pool

The credit guide ties Standard credits to Notion's automatic model selection and Select credits to manually chosen models and Custom Agents. A team can therefore exhaust the balance needed for one workflow while another balance remains. Track the work category, not just a combined number.

The guide also dates the start of Standard-credit consumption for AI Meeting Notes to December 1, 2026. Do not apply that future change as though it were already charging on our October 21 review date. Recheck the effective policy before a later rollout.
